Playing With Paint

Thanks for joining me today for this weeks Papertrey Ink Design Team Tip!
Today I'm featuring a not so typical paper crafting medium... metallic acrylic paint.  I've been having fun exploring with a medium I have never used before and I came up with a trio of cards, each one featuring a different way to use this versatile paint.  I hope today's feature leaves you inspired and excited to try something new yourself.
I first tried my hand at the good old dip, dab, and stamp.  It worked quite well.  I just needed to have a gentle hand when loading up with paint. Here's How: Quirt a small amount of paint onto a paper towel, and spread paint out with the handle end of a paint brush.  Dab, dab, dab, your stamp for an even coat, and stamp.
The image dries quickly too!  Important Note: So quickly in fact that you'll need to place your paint covered stamps into a cup of water immediately. But, no worries if the paint dries on your stamps, it comes off with a bit of rubbing under running water.
I love the goopy effect that's acheived with this technique.  Here I've used the yellow gold Martha Stewart craft paint.  The shimmer is divine!
Next, I pulled out my paint brush.  Using a slightly wet paint brush I painted a swash of rose chrome colored paint directly onto a white cardstock panel.
I build up a few layers of paint before stamping/impressing my stamp image into the paint. Here's a Tip: Have your desired stamp image all ready to go, so you can move quickly.  Also, if you mess up you can brush out the mistake with a bit more paint and stamp again.
My last technique of the day simply involves painting your die cuts. Here's a Tip: Play around with the dampness of your paint brush, a wet brush will give you lots of saturation and a dry brush will give you a lighter and carefree look.
I've created a airy dip dyed look by simple painting (with a mostly dry brush) the bottom edge of these die cut So Striking clouds with sterling colored acrylic paint. The sun... yep, it was stamped in ink.

So what do you think?!  You gonna give this one a try?   I sure do hope so! Well, that's it from me today.

Thanks for stopping by.

Maile

  2. Fun to see all the different looks with your paint experiments! I've used acrylic paint on cards with stencils. I'll have to try some of your ideas.

  3. Love it!!!! I thought on the second one you'd scratched out picture with a stick rather than stamping!

  7. I like the combo of ink + paint. This is a good "use your stash" technique.

    1. I used the framed pattern paper sheets from the Papertrey Ink Black & White All Over paper pad. There's a link to the paper pad in the supply list for that card. Hope that helps!

  9. Maile: Everything you do is beautiful. But what really made me smile is "goopy". Who knew that was a stamping technique? :)

  16. I agree with lauradlc100, the second one got my creative juices flowing. I am going to impress in the paint, but stamp off on the same card front whatever paint I pick up so that it showcases both methods!! The cards are lovely, thanks for sharing!

    1. Excellent idea! I love when I can get more mileage out of just stamps and ink (or paint for that matter). :)

  17. Beautiful Maile, I must try this and I am very sure the lovely photographs don't do the texture justice. Thank you ;-)

  18. Maile, I love all your samples. Long before I got involved in card making, I cut and painted wood - with acrylic paint. I loved doing that type of crafting, but like anything else, it had it's season and isn't all that popular anymore.

Another technique you might try is: While the paint is still wet/damp, shake on some glitter, tiny seed beads, any other dimensional product. That can give it an interesting look too.

Thanks for your gorgeous and simple styles.
